August 2024 update on icare's payment remediation activities

icare has finished reimbursing injured workers affected by indexation underpayments for claims lodged between October 2012 and October 2023.

Workers compensation payments must be adjusted every six months to consider inflation, and this adjustment is known as indexation. In 2022, we detected issues with indexing some workers compensation payments and as a result, we unfortunately underpaid some injured workers for claims lodged between October 2012 and October 2023.

We sincerely apologise to anyone affected. To make it right, we have successfully reimbursed those injured workers, ensuring their payments are accurate.

Correcting underpaid claims

In 2022, we reviewed claims made between October 2012 and October 2019. After reviewing 14,000 claims, icare found just over 6,600 claims needing additional payments, which have now been made.

We extended our review to claims lodged between October 2019 and October 2023. After reviewing approximately 13,000 claims, we made additional payments to just over 8,000 claims.

Enhancing our systems

We’re dedicated to improving the claims experience for injured workers and employers, so we’ve made system enhancements to ensure future indexation adjustments are applied correctly moving forward.

We’ll also continue to carry out regular quality assurance reviews and governance activities.

How to request a review of your payments

If you believe you might be affected by indexation underpayments and haven’t been reimbursed, or if you think your workers compensation payments are inaccurate, you can request a review from your Claims Service Provider (CSP).

Before reaching out, we recommend reviewing our Frequently Asked Questions.

*Please note any application received by the Claim Service Provider (CSP) to claim the indexation payments may be subject to a further review, which in turn may impact the amount paid and the time it takes to make the payment.
